The Golden circle & Buggy tour (Full day)
The Golden Circle is one of the most popular sights in Iceland and is well worth visiting. On this day tour, you'll travel around the Golden Circle in a minivan and as you make our way back to Reykjavik, you'll stop for some extra action that is not to be missed!
The sights on this tour are Thingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall, Kerid crater and the Mt. Esja valley.
Thingvellir, where the Icelandic parliament was established in 930 AD, is a site of geological wonders as it lies in a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic ridge. The rift is clearly visible and the movement of the tectonic plates pulls the island apart, about 2,5cm every year. Thingvellir is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also holds the largest lake in Iceland.
Geysir is a dormant hot spring sitting next to the active Strokkur which erupts every 4-8 minutes sprouting hot water up to 40 meters high.
Gullfoss, the Golden waterfalls, are formed by the glacier river Hvita, originating in Langjokull Glacier. As one first approaches the falls, the crevice is obscured from view, so that it appears that the mighty river simply vanishes into the earth.
Kerið is a 55 m deep volcanic crater, about 3000 years old. The red and black volcanic rock surrounding the crater lake is also a beautiful contrast to the blue-green water at the bottom.
The Esja mountain range consists of dramatic mountains overlooking Reykjavik city from across the bay. The Buggy tour takes you through the valley below Esja and up into the mountains to the foot of the stunning Móskarðshnjúkar, a couple of rhyolite peaks in the east part of Esja.
The action part is a 1-hr Buggy ride where you have the opportunity to get the rally feeling and get your adrenaline pumping. Sitting in a modified arctic buggy, next to your travel buddy, you will drive onto the rough highland roads where you navigate dirt roads and tracks, zooming through rivers and streams along the way as you admire the views of the beautiful valley at the foothills of Mt. Esja. You will both get the opportunity to drive the buggy.
All you need is a spirit for adventure, and a valid driving license for the driver!
