Golden Circle Volcanoes - private tour

Tour operator: Reykjavik erupts     10 hours     Travel method: Mini Bus / Car

The Golden Circle is a “must see” visiting Iceland. But it is clever to use the opportunity to see more – and if possible, stay out of the crowds.

In this tour, you start by driving to the South of Iceland. You are on your way to Lava Center, an ambitious volcano show at Hvolsvöllur, where you will engage with the living earth in an interactive, fun and informative way. You will get to know many of Iceland’s most powerful volcanoes. Mt. Hekla, Iceland’s most active volcano has erupted every decade for a long time but now it has not erupted for 17 years. It could happen any given day now and the notice is usually short. From 30 up to 80 minutes so we are not going on a hike there. But the view is wonderful.

In a similar way, you will learn about Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano that stopped all aviation for several days back in 2010. Also, it’s big aunt, Mt. Katla, that is overdue to erupt and is believed to be hundred times more powerful than Eyjafjallajökull. In an easy, fun and informative way, you will learn and understand the basics of Iceland’s volcanic activity. You will see a simulation of the hot spot underneath this island of fire and how the North Atlantic opened up millions of years ago.

On your way to start the Golden Circle we might stop at some of our favorite places such as the waterfall Urriðafoss or the canyon Brúarhlöð, dug by the glacial river Hvítá into the soft volcanic rock (breccia). It is now time to start your Golden Circle tour. The waterfall Gullfoss is the first stop. What a power! What a sight! Not far from there you will find Geysir, the geothermal area, with the hot spring Strokkur erupting every few minutes.

The tour now takes you back through the agricultural areas in the South. The evening sun makes everything look golden. The last stop is Thingvellir, the parliamentary place of the Viking times. The place is remarkable both historically and geologically.

It is now time to get back home. On our way back from Thingvellir we will pass by Mt. Hengill, one of Reykjavik’s active volcanoes. It erupts every 2.000 years. It is 2.000 years since last time so also this volcano is overdue to erupt. Hopefully not today though.
